How to Compress a PDF Without Losing Quality
By PDFShrink Online · Updated
Start with a method that keeps text and vector graphics intact. That gives you the best chance of a smaller file with the same visible detail. It does not guarantee a large saving, or that every document feature will survive a rewrite.
In PDFShrink, choose Preserve text & vectors first. This rewrites the PDF structure without turning pages into images. If it cannot produce a smaller file, the download is your unchanged original. Avoid image mode when searchable text, sharp diagrams or interactive features matter.
First, decide what you need to preserve
“Without losing quality” can mean several different things. A page can look identical while its digital signature becomes invalid. An image can appear fine on a phone but look soft when printed. Use the requirement that matters for your document, rather than judging only the percentage saved.
| Your priority | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| Selectable text and crisp vector graphics | Preserve text & vectors; check selection and zoomed edges afterward. |
| Photos or scanned text | Try preserve mode first. If that is insufficient, decide whether a visible quality trade-off is acceptable. |
| Signatures, forms, accessibility or archival requirements | Keep the original. A general compression utility does not guarantee these requirements. |
Byte-for-byte preservation is a different standard again: a file that is exactly unchanged cannot also be smaller. Structural optimization changes the file representation. It should not be described as a guarantee that all PDF behavior remains unchanged.
Compress a PDF while keeping text and vectors
- Keep an untouched original. Save a separate working copy, particularly if the document has forms, signatures, comments or important metadata.
- Open PDFShrink Online and choose your PDF. One file of up to 50 MB is supported. Password-protected files are not supported; only unlock an authorized copy with a trusted tool you control.
- Select “Preserve text & vectors.” The image-quality selector stays disabled because this method does not rasterize or deliberately resample the pages.
- Click “Compress PDF.” The selected file is processed on your device. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
- Read the size comparison. A smaller result gets a compressed download. If the generated file is equal in size or larger, the download link offers your original instead.
- Download and open the result in a PDF reader. Do not delete the original after checking only the first page.
A useful quality check takes more than a quick glance
Compare the page count and order. Zoom into small text, thin chart lines and image captions. Try selecting and copying text from more than one page. Follow a link you expect to work, and test any form fields without overwriting your original.
If the original is tagged for accessibility, visual comparison is not enough. Check reading order and assistive-technology behavior with an appropriate validator or reader. If the PDF is digitally signed, examine its signature status in a trusted reader. Rewriting a signed document can invalidate its signature even when the pages look the same.
For printing, examine a representative page at the intended print size. For professional print production, archival submission or regulated document handling, keep the original and follow the receiving organization's PDF specification.
Why an already efficient PDF may not get smaller
A clean PDF exported from a word processor may already have compact text, subset fonts and compressed image data. Rewriting its structure offers little room for improvement. In our small, one-page text test, preserve mode reduced size by about 7.6%; that is a fixture result, not a promised saving for other files.
If preserve mode does not help, go back to the source document when possible. Remove genuinely unnecessary pages or oversized source images there, then export a new copy using settings appropriate for the recipient. PDFShrink itself does not remove pages or let you tune individual images.
For a large scan, image mode may help, but it creates a new image-based PDF. Text is no longer selectable or searchable, and links, forms, bookmarks, tags and signatures are not retained. That is a deliberate change in document features, even if the new page looks acceptable.
When to stop compressing
Stop if the file already meets its delivery limit, if the saved space is trivial, or if the next step would remove a feature the recipient needs. The smallest possible PDF is not always the most useful PDF. Keep a clear filename such as proposal-email-copy.pdf so the reduced version does not replace the master.
