How to Compress a PDF Without Losing Quality

Start with a method that keeps text and vector graphics intact. That gives you the best chance of a smaller file with the same visible detail. It does not guarantee a large saving, or that every document feature will survive a rewrite.

How to Reduce Scanned PDF File Size

A scan stores a picture of each page, sometimes with a separate OCR text layer. Large page images can make a short document surprisingly heavy. The aim is to remove unnecessary image detail while keeping the information people need to read.

How to Compress a PDF for Email Attachments

An attachment can fit your own email service and still be rejected by the recipient. Work backward from the smallest relevant limit, leave some headroom, and check the downloaded PDF before attaching it. A readable, complete document is more valuable than a very small but damaged copy.

Not sure where to start?

For a document exported from a word processor, start with the quality guide. For photographed or scanned pages, use the scanned PDF guide. If your immediate problem is a bounced email, start with the attachment guide.

Every guide uses the same PDFShrink tool and explains its limits. Image mode creates image-only pages; preserve mode may save little on an already efficient document. No guide promises a fixed reduction or the preservation of every PDF feature.
